Rhonda Latreille, B.A., MBA, CPCA , with a specialty in International Management and over 25 years experience in program development, training and evaluation, Rhonda is the founder and CEO of Age-Friendly Business®. She is responsible for introducing a number of new initiatives into the justice, financial, and health disciplines, and has taught licensing exam preparation courses in Life Insurance and Mutual Funds for Foran Financial Institute and Langara College . Rhonda has authored manuals and studies, and has provided editorial review for a number of research projects and academic papers. Rhonda was the president and co-founder of the Canadian Academy of Senior Advisors Inc., and continues to develop new programs to enhance the quality of service to our aging population.


Amy D'Aprix, MSW, PhD, CPCA Doctoral Fellowship with the Mandel Alzheimer's Caregiving Institute, her dissertation was on Ethical Decision-Making Models. Amy has conducted programs on a variety of topics throughout the US , Europe and Canada , including Clinical and program management skills in aging for the Soros Foundation's Open Society Institute, in Budapest , Hungary , and serves as visiting Faculty, Universitatea Babes-Bolyai, Cluj , Romania . Amy has trained social workers on Geriatric Mental Health and Best Practice in Adult Services, and served as Research Associate, Center for Aging Research and Educational Services, North Carolina . 'Dr. Amy' speaks throughout North America on the topics of retirement and caregiving, and is the founder of the Caregivers Coach.


Barry LaValley, CPCA is the President of Right Brain Consulting Inc. He specializes in issues associated with today's fifty-plus marketplace. Barry is a twenty-five year veteran of the Canadian Financial Services industry. In that time, he has been a speaker, writer and educator and has gained a stellar reputation in both Canada and the United States for his work. Barry specializes in communications and marketing to the maturing customer and has written extensively on this subject on both sides of the border. Barry was also a member of the Financial Services advisory board for the National Endowment for Financial Education in the U.S.


Ron Foran, CFA, CFP, FCSI is the founder and president of Foran Financial Consultants Ltd. and Foran Financial Institute. Ron has written numerous articles and publications, and is the primary author of Foran CFA Notes. In addition to developing financial licensing exam preparation curriculum, Ron lectures extensively on investments across North America, in London , England , and other foreign centres. Ron has a passion for teaching and has trained all levels of personnel including CEO's, Presidents and Directors of securities firms to pass required securities exams.


Ronald Martin, MA, PhD is a member of the Centre on Aging and Health and Associate Professor of Psychology at the University of Regina . Over the past ten years, he has been involved in a wide variety of research projects concerning older adults. Ron's current research focuses on pain assessment and management among seniors living independently, and those seniors with severe limitations in their ability to communicate due to dementia. He has published numerous papers in his areas of expertise, and he has presented his research findings at several national conferences.


Ev Kent, CPCA has 30 years of insurance financial services experience in Canada . He has a background in a multitude of industry disciplines including sales, marketing, admin, customer service, compliance and claims. For the past 6 years he has provided personal professional consulting services in over 50 consulting projects to a wide array of banks, insurance companies, industry regulators, training and development organizations, technology groups and international consulting firms. Assignments have been in Canada , the U.S.A. , the Caribbean, the United Kingdom and Eastern Europe .


Doug Planche, CFP, CLU, CH.F.C., F.L.M.I.
is the Senior Vice President for Foran Financial Institute. Doug is responsible for overseeing licensing support programs and materials as well as instructor recruitment and training. Doug has prepared and offers exam prep courses for the Life Licensing Qualification Program, CFP, Mutual Funds Licensing program, Officers, Managers and Directors Course, and Branch Managers Course.


Marc Lamontagne, CFP, R.F.P., FMA, CPCA A national and international speaker, Marc is a partner in Ottawa 's largest fee-for-service financial planning firm of Ryan Lamontagne Inc. With over 15 years in the financial services industry, Marc has a broad range of knowledge and experience in the world of personal finance. He specializes in comprehensive financial planning, investment counselling, tax planning and has delivered numerous seminars and workshops across Canada and abroad. In addition, Marc is the immediate past-President of The Canadian Association of Financial Planners (Ottawa Chapter) and is often quoted in the media. An experienced practicing financial planner, Marc's broad range of expertise means he can provide you with customised solutions from a one-hour counselling session to an ongoing comprehensive financial relationship.


Cheri Crause, CFP, CPCA has conducted numerous educational financial and estate planning seminars on Vancouver Island, through government ministries, ICBC, the motor vehicle branch, the Federal Superannuates National Association, and the B.C. Government Retired Employees' Association. In 1989, Cheri obtained her mutual funds license, and moved to Victoria in 1991 where she has been concentrating on financial and estate planning. Cheri is a Certified Financial Planner and a Real Estate Agent. She has many senior clients, and her work with them often involves much more than mere money management. Cheri has three "almost" all grown children, and a spouse who is also a CPCA!


Alex Nilsson, OC, CPCA , a recent member of the Order of Canada , Alex is a long-term resident and retired Public Health Inspector in Creston , BC . Alex epitomizes fitness and wellness for seniors. In his 70's, Alex roller-skiied across Canada to raise money and awareness for the Canadian Diabetic Association. A life-long "exercise buff", Alex engages in running, cycling and swimming at the competitive tri-athalon level. Active on the local Hospital Board, he also volunteers his time and experience with many community-based seniors' organizations, and is responsible for the development of many services and resources for seniors in the community. His work is truly inspirational, and his presentations on Senior Nutrition and Fitness are unparalleled.


Laurie Duke, R.N., CPCA has served for the past 18 years with an interdisciplinary hospital team in acute Geriatric Psychiatry and Medicine, providing bedside care to patients and mentoring to graduate nurses. For 10 years, Laurie also worked in leadership roles with L'Arche, a non-profit organization supporting adults with developmental disabilities, in Vancouver and in Western Canada. Laurie is the Founding Partner and COO of Gigaluma Technologies, a cutting-edge developer of custom eLearning solutions. With her co-founder, Nita Venter, they are helping Age-Friendly Business integrate new technologies into their existing training modules.


Carla Pajak, MD, R.N., CPCA Carla Pajak is currently completing her degree in medicine at the University of Toronto. Carla has worked as a nurse in Canada and Ghana, studied in England, taught ESL in South Korea, worked on a community farm in rural France, and served as a research assistant to Dr. Alison Phinney at UBC's Centre for Research on Personhood in Dementia Care. She has won numerous scholarships, recently revised a chapter on cognitive aging and was invited to several nursing conferences to present some of her research on spousal caregiving among seniors with dementia. Carla has also prepared a formal paper for publication in a Gerontological nursing journal.


Sandra E. Roberts, CPCA., Lt Cdr. (Ret.) Sandy is a veteran police and military officer, who served for a total of seventeen years. After retiring from the military with the senior rank of Lt. Commander, Sandy entered the world of business, and exercised her management and operational expertise in executive management positions. Sandy worked along with Rhonda Latreille and John Crawford to launch the CSA designation program in Canada , and now pursues her passion for writing. Drawing on years of investigative, security and body guard experience, Sandy has written a book on safety, security and survival for the general public, titled "The Battleground is Everyday Life". This book is currently represented by a USA Literary Agent.


Kenneth G. McNaughton, CFP, CLU, Ch.F.C., RHU, CPCA has been a featured speaker for numerous organizations, and has frequently contributed to publications on issues relating to seniors, especially retirement income, estate planning, and long term care. Ken started in the insurance and financial services industry in 1985, as an agent for a major Canadian insurance company. He started his own company in 1986, specializing in retirement and estate planning for seniors, and in 1994 joined Zlotnik, Lamb & Co. as their representative in Victoria , B.C.


Peter O'Reilly is an author and for many years, a leader in the Hospice movement. Through his company, To The Point Consulting, Pete offers community workshops on 'What to say to a Dying Person,' 'What's it Like and When is it Time,' 'Picking up the Peaces,' and 'Discovering your Gift List.' Pete wrote the booklets entitled "On the other side of the Fence" and "I like that" to share his experiences of working with people at the end of life.


Lori Bamber is a freelance writer, an inspirational personal finance coach and speaker, and a communications advisor to not-for-profit organizations. The author of seven books on personal finance and investment, she is an inspiring keynote speaker and workshop facilitator. The desire to help people achieve financial well-being contributed to Lori's rapid climb through the ranks of the financial industry, where she worked in many areas of financial services, including tax, RRSP, RRIFs, estates, investments and financial planning.
In 1996, Lori began writing her first book, Financial Serenity, and working directly with clients as a financial adviser. In 2000, realizing her life's dream to live as a writer, she left active practice to focus on freelance writing and communications.


Kat Downey, B.Sc., B.Ed., M.Ed., F.D., CPCA earned her degree in Human Biology from the University of Guelph and Bachelor and Master of Education degrees from Queen's University. She taught for the Durham Board of Education and George Brown College in Toronto before she recognized her true calling was in providing services related to pre-need funeral planning and estate preservation.
Kat, an Account Executive with Funeral Plans Canada, specializes in Funeral Preplanning for several funeral homes in the GTA. And, along with her expertise in the funeral industry, that includes international arrangement capabilities, Kat has enhanced her knowledge base to include a variety of insurance needs of all kinds, and perhaps most significantly, in the area of travel insurance in the event of unexpected death. www.legacymatters.ca


Mariam Larson, B.A., P.B.D., CPCA brings an optimistic perspective to the intersection of business and aging. As a gerontologist and consultant, she works with corporate and community clients who are responding to the needs of our aging population. Clients value her ability to integrate management, marketing and gerontology expertise to develop practical solutions to business challenges. As a speaker and facilitator, Mariam delivers inspiration and emotional connection to her audiences. Mariam has provided all stages of eldercare while working and parenting. She continues to volunteer as chair for a senior centre community advisory committee and is a trained hospice volunteer, bereavement group facilitator and artist-in-healthcare. Her workshop, "How to talk with your aging parents: What to say, when to say it, and why" was published as part of a Simon Fraser University course on teaching older adults.


Laura Watts, LL.B is the National Director of the Canadian Centre for Elder Law (CCEL), the national organization which focuses on issues of law and aging in Canada and a Staff Lawyer at the British Columbia Law Institute. Laura is the Vice Chair of the National CBA Elder Law Section and a frequent contributor to national and international CLE programs on elder law issues. She is the editor of Sage Advice, the National Elder Law Section newsletter. Laura serves as the Editor-in-Chief of the Canadian Journal on Elder Law and is the facilitator of the World Study Group on Elder Law. She is co-Chair of the International Federation on Aging's Law and Aging section and the Chair of the National Initiative for Care of the Elderly (NICE Network) Strategic Sustainability Committee.


Pat Murphy, LL.B, CPCA has practiced law in Ottawa for over three decades. His law practice is focused on estate planning, specifically tax-planned wills for the semi-affluent. Pat has developed the "Half-Tax" Will Plan, which incorporates strategies to get preferential tax treatment and to minimize probate and estate settlement costs.
Pat is a frequent speaker and presenter at estate planning forums and in-house financial advisor educational sessions. Osgoode Hall Law School invited Pat to present the "Essential Curriculum of Estates and Trusts" for Ottawa lawyers, accountants, and financial advisors. He has also presented his tax-saving estate planning strategies to the Canadian Association of Financial Planners, Investor's Group, Berkshire, Nesbitt Burns, Cartier Planners, Edward Jones CAFÉ, and recently, to the Canadian Association of Family Enterprise.


John M. Macaulay, B.A. LL.B. graduated from Carleton University in Ottawa with a Bachelors degree in Psychology and the University of Ottawa with a degree in Common Law. He has practiced law in the City of Toronto since 1973.
John's practice focuses extensively on Elder Law and its related fields (drafting wills, powers of attorney, and estate planning and administration - on behalf of estate trustees).
John is a full member of STEP Canada (Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners), the Canadian chapter of the International Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners. He is also a member of the Seniors Information Group and the Estate Preparation Group both of which are dedicated to conducting free information group sessions and the dissemination of important and valuable information to seniors, soon-to-be seniors and their caregivers.


Susan Bessant, CPCA, VP Client Care: Alzheimer's Innovation Institute, is a faculty member of the Canadian Academy of Senior Advisors and an entrepreneur specializing in aging. She has over six years experience as the President and CEO of The Signature Care Corp., the leading seniors' care company based in Calgary , Canada . She received the Better Business Bureau Business Ethics Awards in 2006 for exemplary business and customer relations practices and is the recipient of a Service Excellence Award from the Canadian Academy of Senior Advisors. She has extensive financial and senior management expertise with over 20 years in banking and finance with ScotiaBank.


John Ashby, CPCA, Founder: Alzheimer's Innovation Institute, is a researcher and founder of the Ashby Memory Method, which is based on the pioneering brain injury research of his mother, Dr. Mira Ashby, who received the Order of Canada in 1984. A health care professional with a broad clinical background spanning 24 years, he has worked in emergency medicine (EMT-P), neuropsychology (clinical assistant), neuropsychiatry (clinical consultant) and in neurorehabilitation and geriatric care with brain-injured patients and seniors. John Ashby is the principal research partner in the Ashby Memory Method (Cognitive Retention Therapy) program which for the past 2.5 years has been used by approximately 250 patients in the U.S. and Canada . He is a lecturer, trainer, author, and facilitator for the Alzheimer's Innovation Institute.


Karen Henderson Hon. BA, CPCA, SM, Founder/CEO The Long Term Care Planning Network, founded the Long Term Care Planning Network, Canada 's leading on and off-line resource centre for aging and long term care. Her seminar series, web sites, newsletters, TV/video series and Long Term Care Planner are internationally recognized as key aging and long term care educational and resource tools.
Karen is a well-known educator in both Canada and the US , speaker, writer, media commentator, publisher and consultant in the field of long term care for the elderly who has been published in leading geriatric journals in Canada . Karen continues to create and deliver presentations and programs to help both advisors and clients better understand the role and impact of eldercare and long term care planning.


Frances Morton, MHSc., CPCA holds in-depth knowledge and experience working in the field of gerontology and health policy shaped from almost two decades working, teaching and researching in community, long-term care and acute care settings. Her academic focus has remained elder-specific, starting with an honours degree in Gerontology and Sociology, a Master of Health Sciences, a Long-Term Care Administration Certificate and at present, she is pursuing a PhD. in Health Policy at the University of Toronto .
True to her passion for life-long learning, Frances has solidified her ongoing commitment to supporting informed decision-making and policy development in addressing the needs of older adults - particularly frail seniors and/or those experiencing mental health issues and/or cognitive impairment.


Patricia (Patty) Randall , Consultant, is a community development specialist and a much sought-after author and speaker for organizations and corporations dealing with seniors. Patty has consulted locally, nationally, and internationally, and more recently has written and published a practical guidebook called "Let's Talk - the Care-Years - Taking Care of our Parents/Planning for Ourselves."
